Fairness and Forgiveness: A Forum on the Death Penalty @ St. Ignatius Parish | Cleveland | Ohio | United States

The Diocesan Social Action office is hosting a forum on the fairness of the death penalty in Ohio. This event corresponds to Pope Francis’ call for a Year of Mercy and Respect Life Month in October. In the past year, many inconsistencies and a lack of fairness within Ohio’s death penalty system have come to light. This forum will include two judges who will provide an overview of the recommendations from the Ohio Supreme Court Task Force on the Death Penalty. Other speakers will share their personal experiences of how Ohio’s system has impacted them and their families. We will also present an overview of Catholic Social Teaching on the death penalty and provide time for reflection on the information presented.

Speakers include Judge John Russo and Judge Michael Donnelly, both of the Cuyahoga County Common Plea Court and members of the Ohio Supreme Court Task Force on the Death Penalty; Ricky Jackson, a recent death row exoneree; OTSE Board Chair Melinda Dawson, a family member of a murder victim; and OTSE Board Member Charles Keith, the brother of a falsely accused man who is still in jail.
