Walk to Stop Executions – Lucasville to Columbus

The central message of the Walk to Stop Executions focuses on the need to abolish the death penalty in Ohio. At the same time, the theme, Walk To Stop Executions, encompasses a call to stop all executions. Speaker[s] at the program in Columbus will address international law issues as well as issues related to capital punishment.

The event will begin on Sunday, October 4, in Lucasville, Ohio, near the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. The walk will cover about 13.3 miles per day traveling north on U.S. Route 23. On Friday, October 9, walkers will arrive in Columbus. On most evenings walkers and others will gather for a shared meal, program, and dialogue. These include:

  • Saturday, October 3, 7 p.m., Community Dialogue on Executions at IBEW 110 Offnere Street, Portsmouth.
  • Monday, October 5, 7 p.m., Community Dialogue on Executions at Community of Christ, 539 West 5th Street, Chillicothe.
  • Wednesday, October 7, 7 p.m., Community Dialogue on Executions at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 134 W. Mound Street, Circleville.
  • Friday, October 9, 7 p.m., Community Dialogue on Executions at 1021 E. Broad Street, Columbus.

On Saturday, October 10, World Day Against the Death Penalty, the final leg of the walk will cover the final few miles with walkers arriving at the Ohio Statehouse and Trinity Episcopal Church for the culminating program. Times and locations for these events:

  • Walk to Stop Executions, 10 a.m., Southwood Elementary School, 1500 S. Fourth Street.
  • Rally to Stop Executions, 12:00 p.m., Trinity Episcopal Church, 125 E Broad Street.

The Walk sponsors: Scioto Peace and Justice of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, Footprints For Peace, Ohioans to Stop Executions, Unitarian Universalist Justice Ohio, and the Intercommunity Justice & Peace Center.
